OCS Overview More on Curriculum Our Teachers

OCS children benefit from the many years of teaching experience shared among our teachers. We're very excited about the educational opportunities offered by these three professionals, our interns from The Evergreen State College, and our parent volunteers.

Becky

Becky comes to us with a bachelor of arts in environmental studies and a master’s degree in education, both from Prescott College. We were impressed with her experience working with children in a variety of settings. Becky has taught both in a Head Start program and in a bilingual kindergarten, and has also worked with children at a guidance clinic and at adventure education camps. Becky served as an AmeriCorps member at Roosevelt Elementary School in Olympia.

Becky is passionate about environmental and democratic education, and values an emergent curriculum that is hands-on and empowers students.

Jeriann

Jeriann holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology/Ethnobotany and Global Studies - Sustainable Development and a Master in Teaching from The Evergreen State College. She studied sustainability and community at The Findhorn Foundation in Scotland and lived in Brazil caring for children through a community service internship. Jeriann served two years as an AmeriCorps member at Roosevelt Elementary School and has taught art and gardening to children in a variety of settings in Olympia. She recently moved from Vashon Island where she taught cooperatively for three years at The Madrona School. She is passionate about sustainability and believes in providing children the opportunity to create change in their community. Jeriann values individualized, hands-on learning, and fostering the growth of the whole child.

Candace

Candace has a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Arizona, and has an additional two years in the teaching program at the University of Washington. She has taught preschool through high school. At OCS Candace has taught during the teachers' planning time and acted as a substitute teacher for the last 4 years. She enjoys teaching an integrated curriculum that helps children understand the connections between all knowledge. She strongly believes that it is essential that children be included in making decisions about curriculum, problem solving and other aspects of their learning experience. She is excited to teach at OCS where environmental awareness, creative arts and hands-on learning are established aspects of the curriculum and where, in addition to an excellent academic program, addressing each child’s emotional and social needs and other aspects of development is highly valued.

Internships

In addition to our teaching staff and parent volunteers, we are proud to offer internship opportunities to students of The Evergreen State College. This is an opportunity for college students, many of whom are pursuing their own degrees in Education, to work with and observe progressive, creative teaching in a small, multi-age school that, in addition to general academics, focuses on promoting environmental awareness, peaceful, respectful relationships and conflict resolution skills. If you are a student at The Evergreen State College interested in an internship at OCS, click here to send us an email.
